“A very disappointing stay”

The room was spacious. The views were open and nice. Close to town, walkable.

I chose Basarte Cottage for two main reasons: firstly, because it advertised itself as a family home and reviews from last year mentioned how friendly and welcoming the owners were, and how they chatted to them at breakfast etc. The reality is that this is a self check in house with a key lock and no one is available to speak to. A previous, recent review mentioned it is a 'ghost' hotel and I agree. Yes, someone replies to messages on booking.com but when I asked their name there was no response. I asked to speak to someone at breakfast - again, no response. We saw two women possibly living downstairs but they never introduced themselves so I thought they were perhaps guests. There were three small dogs running loose near the house, all very barky and running to our feet and barking aggressively. The second and equally important reason was that breakfast was included - photographs are provided in the listing of a freshly prepared breakfast and booking.com calls it 'fabulous'. I've attached photographs of what the reality is. It is the worst breakfast I've experienced in a hotel in Spain. Muffins from Macro, ultra-processed unhealthy food. We could only eat the small yoghurt. Fruit bowl consisted of a few old wrinkly apples and lemons - on case you wanted to eat a lemon for breakast... We stayed for three nights and nothing changed. I clarified my partner's dietary requirements (no sugar and UPFs) and the response I got in the message from the unnamed person was that there was a fridge on the first floor where we can keep food. So yes, having paid for accommodation that includes breakast we had to go to the bakery, buy our own bread, orange, tomatoes...Please don't be swayed by the reviews from last year and before regarding breakfast - this is no longer on offer and we were misled and misinformed by the listing unfortunately.

Spacious and clean rooms. A fabulous location and beautiful views from the cottage. The staff are very friendly and quick to respond to further questions and requests.

Nothing to complain. We were very happy with our stay. Only sorry to hear that the owners do not produce wine any more.
