“Strong sewer smell and ventilation problems”
We rented this apartment because we wanted to stay in a quiet place, and because it looked like a modern one. Indeed, the street is quite and the apartment is renovated, with new and functional kitchen appliances and rather fancy fans. Unfortunately overall our experience turned out to be horrible.
We knew that this apartment did not have an air conditioner but we expected that we would be able to ventilate it. However, there appeared multiple problems with that. From the morning the sun hits directly the living room, so by 10am it is very hot, with the fan thermometer reaching 30 degrees. Fans don’t help at all, you just need to run away from the apartment as fast as you can. Worst of all, we were woken up in the middle of the night by a horrible sewer smell coming from the open bedroom window. Even after we closed the window, the smell stayed for a long time. To be able to sleep we put cotton swabs into our nostrils. Next night we closed the window, but did not notice a small gap, so the sewer smell got into the apartment again. Even with cotton swabs we were still inhaling sewer fumes, and we read that those could be very dangerous for your health. The building is located on a steep hillside, so though formally the apartment is on the second floor, at the entrance side it is one floor below the street level, in a well. We think that this adds to ventilation problems and possibly to the sewer fumes accumulation. The bedroom window opens to that side, it is very small and is obstructed by a wall. Even the owner recommended to open the front door to get more air. We contacted the owner about the problems. He did not express any empathy, did not offer any help, just said that the problems are alleged, that they are beyond his control and his previous guests did not complain. He did not mention anything about trying to find the source of the smell and a possible solution. The owner had already received all our money, so we asked for some compensation for our suffering and for the unhealthy conditions but he refused and started blaming us in his responses. There were other issues but those were nothing comparing to the sewer smell. Luckily, we rented this apartment only for a couple of days, and obviously will never rent it again.
