“Top Location”
We enjoyed our stay here. The location is unbeatable, you can walk pretty much everywhere. The room was clean, with a sink inside and a cute little balcony. The ceiling fan worked well, and we got fresh towels every day. Even though the bathroom and shower were shared, we never had any issues. The staff is friendly and provided great customer service. Overall, really good value for the price.
A few things to keep in mind: As it’s an older building, there’s no soundproofing, so I highly suggest guests bringing earplugs. Barcelona is a lively city, especially at night, expect some street noise and chatter. The entrance currently smells, but they’re in the process of renovating, so that should improve soon. One small suggestion: it would be helpful to add a little “Calma House” sign next to the door inside where you enter the code. It’s not immediately clear which door to use, and we saw other guests confused too, as it looks like a residential entrance.

“Decent budget accomodation- upgrades seem to be in the works”
I'm going to give a detailed review because I don't feel this property deserves the bad reviews it has. Do not book here if you are expecting a hotel experience. However, for budget accommodation, we were very happy. By Barcelona's prices, this spot is very affordable, and it's location is amazing. A few reviews mentioned it being in a scary alley. I was quite apprehensive at first, but felt very safe at all times. The alley where you access the accomodation is small and a bit dirty -like many streets in the Gothic Quarter- but we felt very safe. We took a 5am taxi to the airport and didn't feel unsafe at all wheeling our bags around in the well lit, busy area. It is clear that the owners of Calma House are putting in effort to upgrade. The rooms look modern and recently redone. They're small but comfortable. There is no aircon but a good ceiling fan. The bathrooms were also nice and modern and seem fairly new. The rooms were cleaned each day. The rooms take up the second floor of an apartment building. The entrance of the building is a bit dilapidated but the ceilings were being repainted and it seemed like work was actively being done to upgrade the space while we were there. There was some noise from other guests and residents in the building - but I suspect that you'd find that anyway in busy Barcelona unless you're willing to pay for a more expensive hotel with soundproofing. Overall, for the price we paid, we were very happy. If you are wanting air-conditioned, sound-proof hotel rooms then you will need to pay much more elsewhere. But if you're looking for value-for-money, budget accomodation that is clean and safe and located right in the middle of the busy Gothic Quarter, then this is the place.
