The buildings which comprise this property are stunning. Old and yet beautifully maintained, if a little twee in their presentation in places. Beautiful gardens too. The location is fabulous, with great views over scenic countryside. Our room, which was the one positioned above the entrance patio of the hotel, was fine - spacious enough for the two of us. Good value for money, in terms of a place to stay, but see below. The bathroom was well equipped, although it was not always possible to run hot water in the shower.
I'd really like not to have to do this bit, and it feels a little odd given the high overall rating of the property - but I pride myself on my honest and balanced reviewing so here goes. There was little guidance as to the norms of the property on arrival, such as where to get a drink etc. The hostess was showing some others around but somehow missed our tour. We did take the opportunity for an evening meal. The starter and dessert were both excellent, although the main course (the only one offered) consisted of a very dry chicken dish. I also think that in a guest house thirty euros per head for the menu, not including any drinks, is a little beyond expectations. The price was not advised in advance. Drinks were reasonable, for the most part, although here comes my biggest gripe. I'm a massive aficionado of Anis. They serve Mono, my favourite brand. During each trip to Spain I tend to buy a bottle or two to take home. This costs me approximately eight or nine euros per bottle. Imagine my shock on finding that my one glass, as seen on the bill, cost me eight euros - the price of a bottle! I understand that mark-ups are needed for a living to be made but for my mind, the offer at Casa Brandariz, although good value in terms of the accommodation, was considerably overpriced in terms of add-ons. Oh, and if you stay, best of luck negotiating the peculiarities of the serve yourself breakfast. The big round cheese is amazing though.
