Casa del Trotamundos

Villamayor de Campos is a small town in the Province of Zamora, Castile y Leon. The Casa del Trotamundos is a casa rural owned by Marisa, who does speak some English, but not a lot. Trotamundos is decorated to a high standard with a handful of bedrooms, each individually themed. We were in Africa. In retrospect deciding to stay here was a mistake, as our stay happened to coincide with a heatwave in Spain (temperatures of 40C and above). The rooms were advertised as having air conditioning but this was not true. The only air conditioning unit upstairs in the casa was in the lobby outside our room, and even though this was also themed as Africa, it was unclear as to whether it was ours or not. It certainly should have been according to the description of our ‘Deluxe double’. Our first night we left our bedroom door open to try to benefit from the air conditioning in the lobby, but were subsequently asked by Marisa to leave the lobby-to-corridor door open so rooms further down the corridor might benefit from the cooling effect of the unit, which was nowhere near effective enough. This meant that we either had to leave our bedroom door open overnight - not really safe, secure or private - or anybody accessing our room’s lobby accidentally or deliberately would be able to see straight through into the room through a 32-inch square fretwork-style window in the wall, directly opposite the bed! Overall we roasted. The bed was comfortable but the pillows were of the solid doorstep-thickness, probably-memory-foam type and were impossible for us to get a decent night’s sleep on. Our first morning we told Marisa about this but she did not offer us any alternative, which frankly she should have done. My wife had to have physio massage on her neck at our next hotel to try to correct the damage done by our 3 nights’ stay. It took a week or so but did clear eventually. Breakfast was a simple Spanish-style buffet with cooked meats, fresh orange juice, coffee etc but no cheese.
