“Beautiful accommodation with friendly and helpful host, with some challenges”
The host was friendly and very helpful but did not speak English, so we conversed via a translation app I have on my phone, which worked quite well. I had requested that they put the heat on for us, and they did, with the understanding that it would be turned off at midnight. It was quite warm in the unit when we arrived. The apartment itself was beautiful, clean, and well stocked. It had a washing machine and a good kitchen.
The host messaged me in the later afternoon (3-4 PM?) on the day of arrival to let me know that the payment would need to be in cash. I believe that should be listed on the booking.com page, since as a traveller I manage very carefully the amount of cash I carry, since it's a safety concern. I was also away in the mountains beyond cell coverage that day, and only drove back just before dark to get to the accommodation. I happened to actually have the right amount with me, but that was a fluke. The host said that normally nobody has a problem with this situation, but I found it to be highly unprofessional. Travellers who don't know the surroundings should not be potentially forced to find a bank to get cash out, without more notice. The second issue is that the host made a point to say it's unusual to ask for heat at night, and that it costs money. She mentioned that it would cost 6 euros more for the heat, which I was able to pay her out of the extra change I had. Having heat in an accomodation in the fall is a very normal expectation in Canada, so again, it was strange for me to have someone act like it's unusual. And it was 7-10 Celsius overnight at that time. Although the reason I needed heat most was from previous accomodations where I did laundry (none seem to have dryers, just washers) that never dried because it was cold and damp in the unit, so I was hoping this one would be different. The host shared that a better solution would be to find a laundromat and put all the clothes through the drying cycle for a few euros. I did that the next day and it was a good solution, but it did delay me. So I mostly chalk this issue up to different expectations in different countries.
