Evening meal doesnt start till 21:30 which is normal in this area. Restaurants in the area the same. Food at the hotel was mediocre.

“Excellent hotel just wish we had been staying longer to enjoy the spar facilities.”

The best

We loved this hotel. The staff were extremely helpful, the facilities were excellent. The beds were very comfortable. The hotel is situated in the ancient town of Alange with its Roman baths and is off the foreign tourist main track. It was the Easter weekend and the hotel was full of mainly Spanish people enjoying the Spar facilities. We felt that prices were very reasonable in the bar and restaurant and we had the delicious ‘meal of the day’ with 3 courses plus wine and water for 22 Euro per person. Garage parking is also available at a reasonable 8 euro per night. Free parking is also available on quiet streets outside the hotel.

“Grand Hotel in appearance, not so much in reality.”

The best

First impression on entering the hotel is the style of the Grand Hotel, so quite impressive (although it's quite modern.) the room was comfortable with good storage. The breakfast was quite good with reasonable choice. Parking was easy and free in the public parking opposite (mid-September) The chairs in the central patio area were comfortable.

The staff generally appeared miserable, reception, bar and dining room. Rarely a smile. We have reasonable Spanish so this wasn't the issue. End of season blues? We had booked half-board 5 nights - the evening meal certainly was not Gran Hotel style. Limited choice, very little vegetables, desserts all of a "bought-in" style. Very few vegetables and I wondered generally how much was cooked on the premises. Our room overlooking the outside bar had little sunshine or views. Like all rooms, it had a tiny balcony about 0.5 metre deep, but at least one could open the full length windows. We had intended to use the outside free pool, but didn't as it follows spa time table and is closed most of the afternoon. It is unheated, didn't get much sun, leaves floating on the top and looking neglected. The heated indoor pool in the spa is only for relaxation, not swimming (€20 for 20mins) Alange itself seemed a bit rundown eg peeling information board for the Castillo, and things closed down for the season. The final negative was our last night when we had been told we could watch La Liga football that evening. We rushed our meal to watch the second half in the bar and moved 2 chairs so we could see the game. We were then told quite peremptorily by a passing barman that we couldn't sit there, without explanation. We then asked another member of staff what the issue was. He said it was a rule from "la Gestion" (the Management). Then to cap it all, we realised the second half hadn't come on. We asked why? The explanation was that the hotel only paid for a limited number of matches. Some good points but not an hotel we will return to.

“Enchanting Roman spa”

The best

The spa is a UNESCO world heritage site since the Roman baths were discovered. And it is so worth the visit! The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, really lovely people.

Unfortunately, the restaurant and bar foid are not goid. This was our fourth visit and tge situation has not improved. Dinner is unacceptable, cold basic and just plain. The wine included in price is undrinkable. The breakfast was good with so much choice. The bar food and main restaurant just terrible.
