“Nice pet-friendly apartment with a great host”

The best

Spacious and updated apartment with comfortable mattresses and two separate full bathrooms. The English-speaking host was responsive and terrific, she brought us an extra fan when asked and quickly replaced the TV when the old one stopped working, and offered recommendations for anything we needed. Parking is available close by in parking lots and on the street, though it's not free during the days. The apartment is also pet-friendly, which is one of the primary reasons we took it.

To be improved

Apartment is in the middle between two main tourist areas of the city, about midway between Old Town and the Guggenheim, so it was about a 15-20 minute walk to everything. The neighborhood is so-so, we didn't feel unsafe, but it's not a particularly nice area though there are a lot of restaurants and supermarkets around. The apartment is somewhat dark since it's an interior apartment (opens onto interior courtyards, not the street), and it doesn't have air conditioning - usually not an issue in Bilbao, but if you happen to be there during a heat wave, as we were, it can be hot. As for cleanliness, it was clean on the surface, but there are stains on the table that belie its age, and our bare feet ended up very dirty, suggesting that the floor needed a good mopping (we finally pulled out our slippers).
