"Boutique" in name only — anything but in reality"
I had high expectations of Hotel Boutique Museo, given its name and the impression its website creates. What I found, however, was a disappointing — even embarrassing — reality that no self-respecting hotel should ever present to its guests.
Check-in — a cold welcome from the very start
First impressions cannot be undone, and this one was dreadful. The gentleman who received me on the first evening showed no interest in hospitality whatsoever. He was curt, rude, and his communication style was limited primarily to barking. No welcome, no smile, no attempt to make you feel at home. If this is the face of this hotel, there is an urgent staffing problem that needs addressing.
Room access — a security concern?
Surprisingly, the room door was not opened with a key or a keycard — as in any normal hotel — but with a numerical access code. How hygienic and secure is that, exactly, when multiple guests use the same code? A peculiar choice that raises more questions than it answers.
The room — dirty, neglected and deeply depressing
This is where things really went downhill. The room was outright filthy and poorly maintained:
- The bathtub was covered in mould — unacceptable for any accommodation, at any price point.
- Around the toilet there were brown stains and caked-on grime that had clearly not been cleaned in a very long time.
- The bed linen was visibly stained — I genuinely questioned whether it had been washed at all.
- The furniture was worn and battered, and the carpet had clearly seen far better days.
- The only window in the room was tiny, and when I opened it, the view was not of a charming Spanish square but of a storage room packed with old discarded mattresses. Kafka couldn't have written it better.
The light switch disaster — a nocturnal performance
As if all of this weren't enough: the light switches were positioned in the most illogical and random places throughout the room. And as if the room itself had its own agenda, the lights turned on and off by themselves in the middle of the night. Restful sleep was simply not possible. Whether it's an electrical fault or something supernatural, I cannot say — but comfortable it was not.
The aftermath — the bitter aftertaste
When I raised my complaints, the owner offered me a replacement room. However, that room was half the size of the original, with a tiny bathroom containing only a shower — no bath. She considered this a perfectly adequate solution.
Booking.com indicated that I was entitled to a partial refund. The owner flatly refused, citing the fact that she had offered me an alternative room. Offering a smaller, inferior room and then presenting it as an equivalent alternative reflects a troubling lack of honesty and basic customer care.
Conclusion:
Hotel Boutique Museo falls far short of what it promises to be. Dirty rooms, long-overdue maintenance, a rude reception, bizarre electrical issues, and an owner who refuses to take responsibility. Burgos is a beautiful city — skip this hotel and choose a place that genuinely respects its guests.
My advice: Do not book here!
