“Good old-fashioned hotel, clean, friendly and quiet.”

The best

The hotel sends us back to an earlier time: crisp cotton sheets, the smell of cologne in passageways, a writing desk in the room...there is a large indoor pool which came in handy, and for those who like cycling there is an ebike rental attached to the hotel, which is a fabulous way of getting around the Merindades area.

To be improved

The limited space between the toilet and the washbasin means you have to manoeuvre yourself in quite carefully. We looked at several rooms and all were the same, which is a bizarre interior design choice. If you are XXL, this hotel is not for you.

The best

Very friendly staff. Good parking. Swimming pool in conservatory and garden. Complimentary bottle of water.

To be improved

I had a problem with my toilet. They called a plumber but he didn’t fix it. The restaurant was closed & I walked into town which was a nice 15 walk. However, it was very Spanish & nowhere served food before 20.30. There is normally somewhere to get food but not in this town. I think it is just me & Spain! Breakfast unusual.

“Good value and great restaurant”

The best

Great value for money and the swimming pool was a bonus. The highlight though was the restaurant with fantastic food.

To be improved

Clearly the decor is dated but this didn’t effect our experience and was clean and tidy

“Very friendly welcome from Victor who really looked after us · Cons: We weren't too happy at first that the hotel had moved our booking to another hotel. However they made it so easy with Victor transporting us in his e Mustang and the second hotel was very beautiful in a nearby tiny village. We are 2 cyclists and the Jimena has fabulous cycling facilities and Victor runs cycling holidays so were were very well looked after. We ate at the Jimena and the food was really good.”

“Convenient hotel in very nice part of Spain”

The best

This is a very nice guest house cum hotel with really welcoming hosts. We were offered use of their EV charger (but declined as we didn't need to charge) and also given a full explanation of everything we might want to see in the local area. It's about half a mile outside Villarcayo, meaning a nice straight walk to and from a bar. Breakfast was extra, but it turned out to be good value for €7.50 each. The room was comfortable, parking plentiful.

To be improved

It would have been good if the bar had been open, but we didn't mind a walk.

“Lovely stay.”

The best

The lady who served breakfast and completed booking out. They found space in their garage for my motorbike and the variety at breakfast was exceptional.

To be improved

Could have done with a remote for the TV, but it didn't spoil my stay.
