“Excellent stay”

The best

The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was clean and we were at the back so avoided any noises. The evening meal was real good value and the staff worked hard. It was really good value for money.

The hotel was well located, and the overall aesthetic appeared promising. The pilgrimmes menu at the restaurant attached to the hotel was robust! The staff were lovely.

To be improved

The room is is in pretty poor condition, even at a discounted rate. The floorboards are displaced, gaping and deteriorating, and the room was so humid, that it was unbearable to sleep, even though I enjoy the warmth. Because of its position and the skylights and lack of windows, all the hot air set in and I had a hard time sleeping.

Good location; nice view of the ruins from balcony; air con in room; room rate is not much more than that for a private ensuite in an albergue, but unlike albergues which typically open only in the afternoon, this hotel opens early so you could leave your luggage / backpack as soon as you arrive and explore the town burden-free before checkin time.

To be improved

No flyscreen, so can’t open balcony door for cool fresh air without letting in flies

“Beautiful hotel needs attention”

The best

The once extraordinary hotel is still beautiful, and could be again, with some overhauling. The tile decor, the spacious room, the in-room jacuzzi tub, and easy elevator access all reflect luxury accommodation. Staff are helpful and professional. The food and wine in the downstairs restaurant was tasty and reasonably priced (I ate one menu del dia/dinner: 15 euro). As a pilgrim on the Camino de Santiago, I splurged on this rather expensive room with its offering of the tub and its location on the path. I would have given the hotel a 9 out of 10, had it not had the issues outlined next.

To be improved

Unfortunately, my bed mattress and fitted sheet showed signs of bed bug infestation (no live bugs found); I share this, not because the hotel is at fault but in hopes they take further measures to reduce the risk for reoccurrence. Travelers, check your mattresses before placing yourselves or your items on any bed! Even though I loved the room, I had to ask to be moved to another room, which the staff handled efficiently and well. Both rooms I looked at were otherwise clean. There were 2 large skylights in my room, positioned above the bed; unfortunately, they each had very substantial cracks, and I wondered if these could break and fall onto my sleeping body at night. I forgot to mention this to staff at check-out, though I attempted to phone them later. I recommend covering all mattresses with a sealing mattress covers and fixing the compromised window glass.
