“The hotel is ideal for visitors to the Wharf of the Caravels, the monastery and the Botanic Gardens.”
The room was comfortable and had everything we needed. It was within walking distance of the Wharf of the Caravels. The cafe, especially breakfast in the morning was a nice surprise
The reception was round the back. The door was locked and it took a while for the receptionist to come to the door. It was not a good start. There was no obvious vent in the bathroom, though it did manage to dry and freshen itself. There were no kettle or cups in the room. The staff were unaware of the jewel on their doorstep, namely The Wharf of the Caravels. They said we would have to drive there whereas there is an obvious footpath. They said we would have to lunch in Palos de la Frontera whereas there is a good simple restaurant in the museum.
“Excellent location, friendly staff.”
This was not my first stay at Hotel Santa María, nor will it be my last. Its location close to Huelva, close to the Canary Islands ferries, close to the the beautiful beaches of Mazagón and not far from 'Parque Nacional de Doñana' makes it a favourite of mine. The hotel itself is quiet, has ample parking space free of charge and a friendly receptionist, as well as other helpful staff. The rooms that I know off are all equipped with A/C, Four rooms even have a small terrace facing the river which provides a beautiful view on the city of Huelva, especially at sunset.
Any downside? Yes, the TV-screen, in my room, was in size smaller than the average computer monitor and was placed on a side table in such a way that you could only watch it laying on your bed with your head turned. Not really comfortable. The only other issue was in the towel replacement: this has been problematic during my entire stay. Either dirty towels weren't replaced at all, or all towels were taken away, leaving none in the room. The issues were dealt with instantly when addressing a staff member, but I had to do this three days.
“Cons: Room was dark and not ready for us. Missing towels and pillows. Restaurant was closed.”
