“An excellent 'museum'/palace/hotel”
An excellent, peaceful hotel in the small city of Galicia in Spain. Kept by a lady who loves antiques and maintains the place as an old mansion. Has only 7 rooms and a beautiful garden with a swimming pool at the back. About 7 km outside Ourense. Offers absolute peace and quiet if that is what you are looking for. Kept as a house with home-made cake for breakfast and fresh fruits.
“Feel like you're in a storybook!”
If you grew up reading about manor houses, and never though you'd live in one - this is your chance! Beautifully renovated and decorated, with all the modern conveniences, but retaining the feel of stepping back five centuries...from the warn welcome from our hosts to the attention to every minor detail, our stay was perfect. The pool is a luxurious bonus to add to the feeling of being part of a 15th Century novel!
“Don't judge a book by its cover.......”
On arrival you are almost overawed by the fabulousness of the setting and house. Don't be fooled. This place operates around the family and not for YOU!! The older couple who seem to own the place are very thin on grace and charm and give the impression that you are a mild inconvenience despite paying for the privilege. The son is better but we had one interaction with him of value over the 3 days we stayed. Our bed was very uncomfortable and the house is pretty dusty really with lots of useless space for guests - which you can't use. If you do roam you're usually watched by one of the older pair as if they suspect your up to something. True the gardens are lovely but most the furniture is broken, unusable or dirty. The nearest restaurant which only starts serving food at 9.00 pm is not great and pretty downmarket. You can eat in the garden (picnic) at night if you can find a shop but expect to clean up your own furniture. We got a "face" for asking for some plates. And as for the barking dogs at night (we think there is some sort of puppy farm next door? Between the bad bed and howling canines we left exhausted. Oh and there is the poorest internet connection ever.......it basically does not work. The only consolation for this place is its breakfast and the very nice woman who served it up. She was charming. This place did not do what it said on the tin.
“A shame we only stayed one night!”
This pazo is a fantastic traditional Galician house which has been lovingly turned into a small bed and breakfast. The owner was very welcoming and the breakfast in the huge kitchen was a special experience. The room was huge and very comfortable. It was amazing to have stayed in this hotel on our way to the coast. There is plenty to see in the local area, including the Ribeira Sacra and Canon do Sil. Stunning location!
“Magical charm”
Pazo de Bentraces is truly special. A beautiful 15th century manor house lovingly restored and exquisitely furnished, yet with the charm and hospitality of a family home. Set in beautiful gardens and woodland, with a gorgeous swimming pool, Pazo de Bentraces is an oasis of tranquility. It's a family run business and with just four rooms and two suites, you feel well looked after, yet have the space and silence to truly unwind. Guillermo speaks perfect English and is always happy to help, whether it be with suggestions for outings or entertaining our animal loving son with his friendly dog, tortoise and turtles. Our suite was elegant and palatial with a beautiful private roof terrace. The small town of Ourense is charming and delightful to visit to seep up the history and enjoy the tapas and shopping. Close to Santiago de Compostela, Vigo and northern Portugal, there are lots of excursions within striking distance, though we had a lovely restful time just at the hotel. We hope to return.
“Majestic stay”
Sometimes it is important to feel , touch and became a part of history. This pazo gives it all. Sad only that it has limited services, with some upgrades they could become very, very busy, but it looks that it isn't they aim. Practical things: rooms are specious amazing surrounding and pool bed is more or less ok temperature in the room could be a bit higher, at mid season it is chilly rooms are clean but not too much, appearantly to keep spirit of history think about eating out, there is no option on a site or at nearest surrounding.
