“Service lacked - much to be desired”
We chose to dine at the Italian restaurant Sunday 19th April without a reservation after being impressed by the hotel and its surroundings. We were seated promptly and given menus, but unfortunately, the level of hospitality did not match what you would expect from a 5-star establishment. We ordered sea bass and steak, and the food itself was delicious. However, the service left much to be desired. About 20 minutes before our meals arrived, we ordered two additional Sprites, which never came. During this time, several waiters appeared to be gathered at the bar chatting rather than attending to guests. No one checked on our table during the meal, and we were only offered sauces and condiments when we had nearly finished eating. When we decided to order dessert, it took 15 minutes just to get someone’s attention to clear our plates and bring a dessert menu. After the menus were handed to us, the waiter walked away and did not return for another 15 minutes. By that point, we were so disappointed that we decided to pay and leave instead. Overall, this was not the level of service we expected. The younger waitstaff, in particular, seemed to lack proper training and attentiveness. It’s a real shame, especially as the restaurant wasn’t busy, if anything, this seemed to contribute to the lack of service, with staff congregating at the bar rather than looking after guests. Unfortunately, we wouldn’t recommend it.
“Not 5 Star But OK”
This is a good hotel, but its definitely not a 5-star experience. The hotel is huge so the dining rooms can be busy and noisy although the choice of food is very good. Sun loungers tend to be stacked in tight rows so there is limited opportunity for peace and quiet. Large numbers of palm trees look great but only dappled light reaches the ground. There are 2 unobstructed sunbathing patios at the hotel but they are in high demand. Service is efficient but functional. The guest experience is very limited. The hotel is located right in the shopping district of Melonares, so there is a lot to see and do, and there is a wide choice of restaurants.
“Amazing ☀️”
Amazing hotel and premises. Everything is spotless and a nice fragrance in the reception area. The hotel area itself os so big we actually had to use a map the first day 😄 but after that everything felt clear. Friendly and helpful staff who greeted us warmly wherever we went 💖 Check-in and check-out were fast! We did get a welcome drink ☺️ The pools are so nice!! You are not allowed to reserve sunbeds but there seemed to be no one checking so at times it was a bit tricky to find three sunbeds for our family with empty chairs but towels on them, but still managed with a little bit of searching 😊 Buffet was HUGE and a lot of options. Breakfast porridges were delicious ☺️ If you go to breakfast and dinner around peak hours of course it’s busy as there are so many quests 😄 Find out the best schedule for your needs! ☺️ We ate also in the Lopesan hotel nearby, was nice but Costa was way better. The location is superb!! What was surprising, is that even though there are so many guests, somehow it still didn’t feel crowded and was not loud and noisy. We will go back and recommend this hotel to anyone. Thank you for an amazing holiday!! 😊☀️
“Plenty to like, but definitely things that need addressing for a 5 star experience.”
Stayed as a couple in a Unique deluxe room. Hotel enjoys a good location. It's a big hotel and there are definitely things we love, and things that in our opinion definitely need addressing, We were B&B. Based on some of the other reviews there are some consistent themes! I'll break down our thoughts: Housekeeping - 5/5. Wow they work hard. We were visited 2 or 3 times a day for cleaning, a turn down service or tea/coffee replenishment. Room was always spotless. Spa/gym - 5/5. A lot of space, great facilities....and at the end of the spa there were plenty of sun beds! We had a complimentary spa circuit (staying Unique) and we really enjoyed it. Breakfast 3/5 - we ate in La Toscana. Great choice and hot food to order was mostly really good. Coffee warm (not hot enough). The issue here is the queueing system. They encourage you to book, but when you arrive it's basically just one queue, because the sign that directs you to queue left/right based on booked or not booked is right at the from of the queue, so it's utterly pointless as you cannot see it until you get to the front of the queue. So everyone forms one long line. They then ask you all the same questions that you entered into your booking (i.e. booking is completely pointless) and your reservation makes no difference to the table you end up with because it's basically whatever is available. So the queue around the peak Easter time was not what you want to be met with in the morning. Need a better system here! That said, the team worked hard to keep the tables turning over. Main coffee square outside behind reception 2/5 - it's a lovely area but they managed to get the drink order wrong on 3 days out of 4 and we were only ever ordering 2 coffees!. One day we sat for 20 mins waiting to order before anyone came, and there were only about 10 other guests around the whole square. They seem to be stood watching but don't notice people coming/going etc. Pool area 3/5 - there is a lovely area that in theory is reserved for clients booked on a Unique basis. The issue is towels, towels, towels. It's one of the more horrible human behaviours. Why people feel the need to do this is beyond me - so selfish. Parties of 2 adding a towel to a 3rd bed...just because, people not returning to sun beds for hours one end....hotel need to remove the towels and belongings and open the beds up for other guests to enjoy. Reception - 1/5. The lady who checked us in was pleasant. No welcome drink but we were offered a drink on departure. They seem to do their very best to ignore you. At times there were 3 team members lined up to help guests on the 'Unique' section, nobody wanted to look up - so we just stood there. It's a basic service at a reception - look up and greet guests even if you are busy. At other times there would be no team members at the Unique section but team members in other sections with no guests - they would not call you over - they would just leave you stood there until someone came to help out at the 'Unique' station. We tried to order a transfer (I think it was with Marcos). Not convinced it had been done correctly as he verified my email address and then no email arrived, so went back the next day and there was no booking (Thankfully I sensed an issue the previous day so knew to check). There was normally a lady staring straight a screen in the middle of the reception area, but I am sensing that there was no supervisor as you could clearly see where the issues were at different times but nobody was doing anything about it. This needs a pretty big service overhaul in my opinion. The only time I saw smiling at reception is when team members were talking to each other! So good and bad. We would love to stay again, and if we did we would likely try and book the Unique facilities again - but based on this experience I would not stay there again at a peak time (like Easter holiday) as I don't think the hotel can cope with the volume of guests at such a busy time in spite of the size of the place.
“Beautiful hotel, great staff, amazing pools and brilliant food - go half board premium”
Fabulous hotel. I’m writing this review ahead of a return visit in June. I came to the hotel with my sister and a few friends last June. all of us had been to gran can multiple times but it was the first time any of us had stayed there We arrived quite late I think we got to the hotel around 10pm, check in was quite quick. The hotel had left courtesy big snack boxes full of bread olives cheeses ham etc and bottles of water. Was more than enough to eat at that hour. Our room was spotless and very large, we were in triple room, there was a full sized single put you up bed as the third bed which our friend said was very comfortable he zonked straight away on it 😂 Our room was overlooking the road so no view but we didn’t spend that much time in the room so it wasn’t a bother to us, there are so many lovely areas in the hotel to either sit or lay down and tan The hotel foyer and grounds are stunning Absolutely lovely in the foyer / reception area, daytime it’s just somewhere to sit and wait or relax evenings the bar is open one night we walked through and there was a violinist there The breakfast area is through the foyer, there are a couple of shops selling clothes etc and a small supermarket which is very handy and around the same prices as the other local shops in the immediate vicinity There is a big supermarket just up the road we got a cab up there day one to stock up on water soft drinks wine etc and snacks. It’s much cheaper there than the hotel shop maybe half of the price. Taxi is only about 5 euros each way so if you’re staying for a week like us it’s defo worth the trip up there. They had really nice fresh fruit in there when we went and way more choice than the small resort shops. To get a cab back just stand on the corner and hail one you won’t wait long. Breakfast is a really long buffet counter my advice go in and have a look what’s there the first time you go in as there’s so much choice then go back and get your plate 😂 I picked up food then walked along and wanted other stuff the first day 😂 I just ate what I’d taken and knew for the next day. Food was fresh and good quality. They have an egg man making you omelettes which I love at a hotel breakfast The coffee is bad and the coffee pot things don’t work properly, that’s my only very minor gripe over breakfast, the staff do come around the tables intermittently offering coffe but I didn’t like it and it was lukewarm. As I said not a big deal there is a selection of teas, juice and smoothies to drink too We had half board premium that means you can eat at a restaurant in all 4 lopesan hotels, they’re all nearby and readily walkable. You need to book just got to reception on the day they do it for you. We liked all of the restaurants our two favourites were the Italian at this hotel and the restaurant at the baobab. They all really are good though As a guest you are able to go up to the blue marlin rooftop bar at the sister hotel also go into the cafe del mar on the seafront without having to book. Both are amazing especially at sunset ❤️ The hotel grounds and pools blew us away it’s a beautiful place, everything is spotless so well maintained, the grounds are a maze of paths surrounded by mature tropical plating of palm trees cacti etc. it’s beautiful. The pools are all great our fave was the lazy river pool it’s a slow moving lagoon style pool with a swim up bar Heaven! The hotel provides pool towels you can change them daily if you want to there are huts to go to they will give you fresh ones We really enjoyed our stay last year so much so that we have rebooked something we’ve never done before Enjoy your holiday it’s such a lovely place! Top tip bus station outside of the hotel to the right. Buses are cheap and reliable in gc definitely worth using if you want to go along to Puerto Rico / Amadores or to Mogan. Or anywhere of a distance rather than paying for a cab. You can pay via card / contactless on them or cash
“Worst hotel staff we have ever witnessed!”
Our stay at this hotel was, quite frankly, one of the worst experiences we’ve ever had, and that’s saying something given that we regularly stay in 5-star hotels. This place is nowhere near that standard—far, far from it. The most upsetting incident occurred on the final morning of our stay. My wife, who had been finishing packing, joined her family slightly later than the rest of the party. She was then pulled aside in front of a large crowd by a male and female member of staff and aggressively shouted at about a supposed “rule” that she wasn’t allowed to join later. This rule appears to be entirely made up. The way she was spoken to—publicly, loudly, and in such an intimidating manner—was humiliating and completely unacceptable. We raised this immediately with both the restaurant and hotel manager, hoping for some level of professionalism or resolution. Unfortunately, that only made matters worse. We were barely allowed to speak, were met with no apology whatsoever, and the situation was handled with a complete lack of empathy. My wife was left in floods of tears, struggling to even catch her breath, and still no one showed any real concern. To make matters even more frustrating, the hotel manager admitted they did not understand why the front-of-house staff had enforced such rules, confirming that family members are in fact allowed to arrive at different times. It was clear that staff were simply making rules up as they went along. The issues didn’t stop there. The buffet food was dreadful—limited, poorly prepared, and with almost no consideration for vegetarians or vegans. Every meal felt like a struggle to find something even remotely appetising. Around the pool, getting a sunbed was practically impossible, especially over the weekend. At the pool bars, there were multiple signs instructing guests to “wait to be seated,” yet staff would repeatedly walk past us without acknowledgment or assistance. We were left standing there for long periods being completely ignored. This level of disregard was a consistent theme throughout our stay. To make matters worse, every night was disrupted by extremely loud karaoke-style singing and blaring music that went on until the early hours of the morning. It was unbelievably noisy and made it nearly impossible to get any proper rest. When our son unfortunately bumped his head, we went to the bar asking for some ice. The response? “We have nothing to put it in.” No concern, no effort to help, and certainly no sign of any first aid support. It left us questioning whether basic safety provisions even exist here. The cleanliness of the rooms was also unacceptable. We arrived to find leftover food packets still in the room and floors that were visibly dirty. It gave the impression that the room hadn’t been properly cleaned at all. Breakfast was another daily frustration. It was virtually impossible to get a high chair—staff would simply say they were all gone, with no attempt to assist or find a solution. As a result, we often had to feed our baby in his buggy, which is far from ideal. Overall, the staff were consistently unhelpful, dismissive, and at times outright rude. This hotel falls drastically short of the standards it claims to meet, and we would strongly advise others to look elsewhere.
